Long Lens Landscape

The obvious thing to do when shooting landscapes is to reach for the widest angle lens you have with you. Hoping to grab as much of the vista before you.

Its a technique that works well and I wouldnt be without my 14-30mm lens. I’d certainly recomend that any budding landscape photography aspires to have a wideangle lens in their kit bag.

Don’t be put off if you don’t have such a wide lens though. Taking multiple shots and stitching together panoramas can give stunning results and huge file sizes. Many smartphones have this feature built in and can achieve some surprisingly good results.

Another technique is use a telephoto lens. Zooming in to pick out detail or even capture abstract forms within the landscape. The image to the left was captured at 300mm using the inexpensive Nikkor 70-300mm F4.5-5.6.

If in doubt take both long and wide images if you can. This way you give yourself options when it comes to processing your final images.
