Perch Rock

New Brighton Lighthouse (or Perch Rock) sits at the mouth of the river Mersey. Built in 1827, it was decommissioned in the early 70’s.

Today it stands next to the Napoleonic fort that gave it its name, and along with much more modern sea defences, makes a great location for seascapes.

On the day of my visit, the sky was clear blue all the way to the horizon. Great for day-trippers (and there were many) but terrible for photography. All you can do in these situations is make the best of what you have. Using a 10 and 16 stop filter for creative effect on the waves. gave some compositions I was happy with.

As the sun set and the golden hour arrived, things fell in to place and I managed to capture the soft light on the lighthouse and in the reflections.

6 hours in one location…. the patience of a landscape photographer……worth every minute.
