The Hidden Ruin

In my last post, I visited a folly in South Yorkshire. I mentioned that the original plan was to visit a different folly but unfortunately that wasn’t to be. In fact, the folly in question is much closer to home and has been on my “to visit” list for quite a while.
I knew from the research I’d done that it was situated in a small pine plantation, the woodland has grown up since the folly was built, hiding it from clear site.
With a forecast of thick fog (the most perfect conditions for woodland photography), it was time to finally go and find it.
I had expected it to be difficult to find, technically it’s on private land, with very little on the internet to show its exact location.
It truly is hidden from view until you get within a few metres of it but when you find it, sat in a little clearing between the pines, it’s has a truly magical feel. Straight out of a Tolkien novel.
As I always do at a new location. I walked around with camera, taking test shots, hand-held. I find this the best way to look for the compositions that I really want to capture before getting the tripod set up and committing to the scene.
Although it’s quite a small area, with only the one main subject, I still ended up staying there for nearly two hours as the fog drifted in and out of the forest. My patience was rewarded with images I’m truly happy with.
